Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson announced the establishment of the U.S. 2nd Fleet, during a May 4 ceremony at Norfolk Naval Station, Va. The new fleet’s commander would report to U.S. Fleet Forces Command. The ship’s sailors, Marines, vessels and aircraft would operate along the U.S. East Coast and North Atlantic Ocean.
“Our National Defense Strategy makes it clear that we’re back in an era of great power competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex,” Richardson said. Second Fleet had been disestablished in 2011. At the time, personnel and assets were assimilated by Fleet Forces Command.
