Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command / U.S. 5thFleet, was found dead in his quarters in Bahrain Dec. 1. Media reports indicate that Stearney took his own life.
“This is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the team at 5thFleet, and for the entire U.S. Navy,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a prepared statement. “Scott Stearney was a decorated naval warrior. He was a devoted husband and father, and he was a good friend to all of us.”
Richardson went on to say that while the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) was investigating Stearney’s death, foul play has been ruled out as a cause.
Rear Adm. Paul Schlise, who had served as 5thFleet’s deputy commander, has assumed command.
