AF Will Review Some Medical Discharge

Some airmen who were medically separated will get a new shot at having their disability ratings reviewed. The Defense Department’s Physical Disability Board of Review has agreed to look again at the records of airmen who were separated between Sept. 11, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2009, providing they left the service with disability ratings of 20 percent or lower. The board will compare disability ratings assigned by both DoD and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and make recommendations for changes accordingly if warranted. Changes would be retroactive to the service members’ original dates of separation. Veterans who wish to have their cases reviewed cannot appear before the board in person. Rather, they will be allowed to submit documents that would support their claims to higher disability ratings.
