The Department of Veterans Affairs and a company called DeepMind Health have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can predict the occurrence of a deadly kidney disease. In an article published in the July 31 issue of Nature magazine, VA and DeepMind Health described the breakthrough — which allows doctors to diagnose and treat Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) up to 48 hours in advance. The condition is described as otherwise extremely difficult to find. Failure to treat AKI could have very serious health consequences for patients. Work toward bringing the new technology to the clinical setting is taking place at VA’s Palo Alto (Calif.) Health Care System.
