Ali Awni al-Harzi, a Muslim extremist leader with close ties to the Sept. 11, 2012 attack upon the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, was killed in a June 15 air strike. “His death degrades ISIL’s [the Islamic State’s] ability to integrate North African jihadists into the Syrian and Iraqi fight and removes a jihadist with long ties to international terrorism,” the Pentagon stated in a June 22 announcement that he had been killed.
