The Trump administration’s plan to bar transgender persons from serving in the armed forces has drawn sharp criticism from the American Medical Association (AMA). The decision fails to consider scientific evidence that proves that persons diagnosed with gender dysphoria are not suffering from any psychological or medical disorders, AMA president Dr. Barbara L. McAneny said in an April 11 announcement.
“Transgender service members should, as is the case with all personnel, receive the medical care they need,” McAneny said in the statement, which came out a day before the bar was scheduled to take effect.
