Reacting to a recent Associated Press (AP) story, the Senate Armed Services Committee ordered the Defense Department to conduct a “comprehensive assessment” of its related policies, the wire service reported May 26. Defense Secretary James Mattis responded by saying that his office — not the DoD inspector general — would conduct the review. The AP had reported nearly 700 such cases — in which dependent children committed sexual assaults upon other dependent children — during the past decade. Such crimes tended to go underreported and unpunished, according to the report, because the applicable military laws do not apply to civilian dependents. Also, base criminal investigators tended to not prosecute such cases — even when guilty parties confessed to their crimes, according to the AP.
