The Army has begun testing of driverless trucks. The web magazine Wired reported July 8 that the Michigan-based U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center has teamed up with Daimler Corp. and a start-up company called Otto to develop and drive four semi-autonomous trucks on highways in the state, among real traffic. During their seven-mile trek, the vehicles communicated with each other via short-range radio, and watched the road by using LIDAR and onboard cameras. The Army expects to field autonomous trucks within the next 10 to 15 years.
