The Blue Angels, officially known as the Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron, will move soon to F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters, Seapower Magazine reported Aug. 14. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded Boeing, the plane’s manufacturer, a $!7 million contract to convert some existing Super Hornets to platforms suitable for aerial demonstrations. The work would entail removal of the nose cannon, installation of a smoke-oil tank, and a spring installed on the plane’s stick that would make it easier to fly while inverted. The planes will replace the C/D Hornets the Blue Angels now use. The work should be completed by December 2021.
