U.S. officials are concerned that China may be planning to build a new radar station in the South China Sea. The Naval Institute Press reported Feb. 22 that the stations could threaten the safety of U.S. and allied stealth aircraft that fly in the area. Satellite imagery has shown that the Chinese possibly could place the station in the Cuarteron Reef, a disputed area not far from the Philippines. The imagery does not provide conclusive proof of an operable radar station, but Pentagon leaders are concerned nonetheless and will continue to monitor the situation.
