The Department of Veterans Affairs and Internal Revenue Service want to make sure that combat-injured veterans are aware of a tax break for which they are eligible. Under federal law, such veterans should not be taxed on the one-time lump sum disability severance pay they get from the Defense Department when they separate from service. Because of past confusion regarding such payments, the government owes more than $78 million to roughly 14,000 veterans. Veterans also should note that they could get free tax preparation through a number of reputable public and private resources.
