Austal USA will build two expeditionary fast transport ships (EPFs) – the 13thand 14thin their class – under terms of a $261.8 million Navy contract. Expeditionary fast transport ships offer large open-mission decks and living spaces, making them capable of providing support for missions that would include engagement with adversaries, humanitarian aid, disaster relief and maritime security support operations, as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. With a draft of 13 feet, a “unique” propulsion system and large mission bays, EPFs can operate at speeds above 40 knots in relatively shallow waters. Construction is taking place at Austal’s Mobile, Ala., facility.
