Deployed troops no longer can carry any electronic device on their persons that could help enemies identify their location. Physical fitness aids and applications on devices that “pinpoint and track the location of individuals” are included in the ban, according to a Pentagon press release. Any deployed service member, by definition, is situated in an “operational area” and therefore barred from using location applications or devices. Commanders will have discretion in determining if the ban would apply to other areas as well. Meanwhile, the Pentagon plans to continue reviewing the use of such devices and applications, and assess security risks associated with them.
