The Defense Department is now the lead federal agency responsible for conducting background investigations, assuming the job from the Office of Personnel Management with the start of fiscal year 2020 on Oct. 1. The Pentagon’s Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) will oversee the operation. The mission includes security and suitability background checks and adjudications, as well as training, education and certification for the government, industry and allies. The agency also will work to identify and neutralize foreign intelligence threats.
