Gen. Joseph F. Dunford became the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps, in an Oct. 17 ceremony at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C He succeeds Gen. John F. Amos. Dunford received his commission in 1977 and served as an infantry officer, moving on to command companies and regiments. He then served as senior aide to the commandant and assistant commandant. Amos is completing a 44-year career that he began as a naval aviator, before moving to the Marine Corps. Besides commanding II Marine Expeditionary Force, he served as assistant commandant before assuming the position as the service’s top uniformed officer.
