The number of military veteran new hires in the total federal civilian work force increased in fiscal 2002, according to the Office of Personnel Management. Some 47,510 veterans were hired, a rise of more than 19 percent over fiscal ’01. The percentage of disabled veterans in the work force was 4.5 percent in fiscal 2002, a drop of 0.1 percent from the previous year. However, the percentage of veterans in the force with 30 percent or more disability was up 1.9 percent over the previous year. The federal government had a total of 450,100 veterans employed in fiscal 2002.
