The internet search-engine company Google soon will no longer provide the Defense Department with assistance interpreting imagery provided by aerial drones, NBC News reported. Google had provided the service for several years under a Pentagon program called Project Maven, but encountered significant resistance to it from dissident employees. Their issues centered upon the company’s mission to do no harm, and the risks that the artificial intelligence gleaned from drone surveillance could be compromised or used to enhance capabilities of weapons systems.
