President Trump presented the Medal of Honor during a March 27 White House ceremony to the parents and son of Army Staff Sgt. Travis Atkins, who died while shielding his comrades during a June 2007 suicide attack in Baghdad.
Records show that Atkins noticed the bomb strapped to his attacker while fighting him hand-to-hand. Realizing that the ensuing blast would kill him, Atkins nevertheless covered the bomb with his body and absorbed the fatal explosion. The Montana native was a squad leader with the 10thMountain Division at the time. A day after the White House presentation, acting Defense Secretary David Norquist presented Atkins’ family with the soldier’s Medal of Honor flag and formally inducted him into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes.
