A ground-based cruise missile bearing a conventional payload was launched from San Nicolas Island, Calif., on Sunday, and successfully hit its target roughly 310 miles away. Air Force magazine reported that the launch is intended as a clear signal to potential adversaries that the system is capable of carrying nuclear payloads as well, noting that the Trump administration is moving forward with its development in the aftermath of pulling out of the INF Treaty with Russia that had been in effect since 1987, before the breakup of the Soviet Union.
