Although President Bush authorized two new medals last year for those engaged in the Global War on Terrorism, the criteria for them are still in the review process, according to a Defense Department spokesperson. The GWOT Expeditionary Medal is destined for service members who deploy to fight and the GWOT Service Medal is intended for those who support and defend, said the spokesperson. The expeditionary medal package is currently under legal review at DoD. The next step for both medals will be formal approval and guidance to the services by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz. That done, the services will be authorized to issue the medals.
