Service members and their families who are heading to or from 16 more installations via the PCS (permanent change of station) process will have their household possessions shipped under the new Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). Additionally, limited shipments will be available for four other locations, US Transportation Command announced.

With the new arrangement, the Defense Department’s U.S. Transportation Command hopes to increase the number of shipping orders for September by 4 percent of the total monthly average of domestic shipments. The aim is to fully implement GHC domestic shipments by next spring. This would entail adding more installations and increasing monthly total shipping volumes.

Some 116 task orders were sent to the commercial contractor who handles GHC moves as of Aug. 20, with 94 such shipments completed. Initial results indicate that some 96 percent of all customers expressed satisfaction with the overall experience.

“The positive feedback received from both customers and our transportation offices shows that we are headed in the right direction,” said Andy Dawson, DPMO (Defense Personal Property Management Office) director. “This summer provided us the opportunity to validate new business practices and IT systems for GHC on a smaller scale while customers experience the new program. Overall, we are satisfied with how things have gone so far and anticipate continued progress as GHC volume increases this fall.”

The 16 installations are: Fort Huachuca, Arizona; the Presidio of Monterey, Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California; Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado; Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia; Forts George G. Meade and Detrick in Maryland; Minot Air Force Base, South Dakota; Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania; Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina; and Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia.

The four locations with limited service are: Norfolk, Virginia to and from the Seattle, Jacksonville (Florida) and San Diego areas; and San Diego to Seattle.

In October, expansion should reach sites in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas and Utah.
