The Army is taking steps to restore and renovate historic housing on its installations, while ensuring that soldiers’ families have safe and sturdy places to live. Based on guidance from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the service plans to address issues with base housing units built between 1919 and 1940. Renovation of these properties would mitigate problems with lead-based paint and asbestos, and install systems that are easier and more economical to repair. The plan calls for expand ed living spaces, as well as modernized kitchens, bathrooms, plumbing, electrical systems, and heating and air-conditioning units.
