Working in collaboration with NASA’s Mission Directorate and industry, the Air Force Research Laboratory has conducted the first successful test of a liquid methane rocket engine. The test of the Broadsword 25K engine took place earlier this month at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Masten Space Systems Inc., of Mojave, California, is the corporate partner in an endeavor that began in late 2018. During this latest test, the engine was fueled with a large supply of high-pressure liquid nitrogen. During four prior tests, the development team proved that the engine’s systems would function as intended. This latest “hot fire” test proved that its tune ignition and start-up transients work properly.
