Four Marine Corps drill instructors are facing disciplinary action for hazing recruits, according to the web site We Are the Mighty. The site reported that one DI at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., identified as Staff Sgt. Antonio Burke, is accused of coercing a recruit to surrender his Facebook password — which he then used to make advances at the recruit’s sister. At Parris Island, S.C., three other DIs are accused of forcing recruits to exercise and train in an abandoned and dirty squad bay known as “the dungeon.” Recruits complained of becoming sick after breathing in dust during the exercise sessions, which would last at least 20 minutes. Allegations of recruit abuse are drawing increased scrutiny by military and civilian leadership alike, in the aftermath of a recent suicide by one Parris Island recruit.
