A Marine who was born in a Russian prison and orphaned at 2 years old became the first woman to complete the Corps’ traditional entry-level infantry training. “I like to prove people wrong. No matter what your belief is, you can’t argue that I didn’t do it, because I did,” Pfc. Maria Daume, who was adopted and raised by a family in New York, told Voice of America. She will serve as a mortar Marine – one of the service’s most select and demanding combat specialties.
