The Marine Corps has activated its first regiment-level littoral communications company. The 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, which will be stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, is part of Commandant Gen. David H. Berger’s plan to reshape the Corps into a modern force that he believes will be better poised to meet emerging threats to national security.
“We must be capable of plugging into naval, joint and combined communications networks and seamlessly sharing data that enhances situational awareness, targeting and force synchronization,” Berger said during his dedication speech.
The new company will include new equipment and personnel that is atypical of traditional infantry communications sections. It initially will consist of four platoons, focusing respectively on wideband, data, radio and maintenance. In time, the unit will move toward a joint task force-like configuration. At that point, each platoon will consist of Marines trained in different skill sets that can be organized to support specific missions.
“Our key to success will be our ability to task-organize our communicators into agile teams that support the command and control of the MLR [Marine Littoral Regiment] in distributed operations,” said Capt. David Noble, the new unit’s company commander. “our team is excited to shape the way our Marines are trained, equipped and educated to best meet this task.”
