Marine units are getting smart phones this year, to use for calling in fire support. Using the Target Handoff System Version 2, dismounted Marines will be able to call for close air, artillery, and naval fire support through a secure digital-communications system. The phones are equipped with laser range finders, video down link receivers, and a combat net radio, and will replace the current Target Handoff System. Other than that, they will look like any commercially available, off-the-shelf devices.
