Upgraded night-vision goggles are making their way to Marine Corps infantry units, providing both better capability and lighter weight. The service has procured roughly 1,300 Squad Binocular Night Vision Goggles, each of which combines a night-vision device and enhanced clip-on thermal imager.
“The entire depth perception and speed that we can operate in is going to significantly increase,” said Cpl. Zachary Zapata, a Marine who took part in recent training on the goggles at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The service intends to procure roughly 16,000 of the goggles, with additional fielding slated for Marine Rifle Squads in September. In time, the service’s entire ground combat element will have the goggles.
