Select Marines will be able to receive a new military operational specialty (MOS) in software development and application, under a new three-year pilot program the service is sponsoring.
The Marine Corps Software Factory (MCSWF), where the training for these Marines will take place, set up shop earlier this month at the Army Software Factory facility in Austin, Texas.
The factory “is about outcomes, creating advantage for Marines at the tactical edge today,” said Lt. Gen. Matthew Glavy, the deputy commandant for information – the department that is sponsoring the program. “The MCSWF will provide viable capabilities to enhance mission readiness through the power of information.”
During the three years, work will focus upon demonstrating a scalable software development capability from within the service itself. Evaluation of the fleet’s needs will drive overall requirements.
The enterprise was triggered by an interservice announcement issued a year ago, which called for Marines to step forward with their ideas that would drive the service’s efforts to “design and deliver software capabilities.”
Encouraged by the response, the service’s leadership then set forth with plans to set up the MCSWF and seek qualified applicants from within the ranks.
A three-year pilot will be conducted in three phases: a technical accelerator; one-to-one pairing enablement, and employment utilization. Industry representatives will play key roles in the training.
The Marine Corps is encouraging interested members to present their ideas by emailing mcswf@usmc.mil. More information is available on the factory’s web site: https://www.hqmc.marines.mil/mcswf.
