Marines who serve in tank units will be given the chance to leave the service early, as the service moves forward with the plan to eliminate armor. reported Dec. 6 that the service will extend the opportunity to senior armor non-commissioned officers, main battle tank repairers and technicians, and tank officers. The article stated that Marine officials would not say how many Marines would be eligible, but that some 1,300 people would need to transition to other career fields or armed services if they wish to continue their military careers. Marines who opt to leave would be considered as having fulfilled their military obligations, but would still need to adhere to reserve or individual ready reserve requirements, the article stated.
