Jamal al-Badawi, the al Qaida operative largely responsible for the October 200 bombing of the destroyer Cole, was killed in a precision strike on Jan. 1, U.S. Central Command announced. Badawi was in Marib governate, Yemen, when the attack took place. Under his guidance, terrorists attacked Cole as the destroyer was in port at Aden, Yemen, for refueling. Seventeen sailors died and another 39 were wounded in the attack. Badawi faced some 50 federal charges in the U.S., largely relating to terrorism.
