Countrywide Financial Corporation, which operates a group of lending companies, has announced that a program it started this summer called “Countrywide Cares for Our Troops,” has raised more than $150,000 to help the United Service Organizations provide care packages to service members abroad. The company hopes to raise more than $200,000 by Labor Day, to help the USO fill 8,000 care packages with prepaid calling cards, disposable cameras, toiletries, sunscreen and other items. In just one month, between June and July, company employees already had contributed more than $70,000 toward their goal. Edward A. Powell, USO president and chief executive officer, said the USO was grateful to Countrywide and its employees for their support of Operation USO Care Package.
