The number of National Guard troops mobilized nationwide in response to the COVID-19 threat was expected to reach roughly 4,100 as March ended. Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, said that tens of thousands could be mobilized before the pandemic ends. Total Guard strength sits at roughly 450,000 troops. When mobilized, they could provide assistance with airlift, ground transportation, command and control, engineering, tents and health care.
“We remain flexible and committed to whatever mission we may be called to do,” Lengyel said.
