The Navy would like to place a suitable Advanced Gun System (AGS) on Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers, Seapower magazine reported Nov. 17. Each ship now has two 155 mm guns, but the Long-Range Land-Attack Projectile (LRLAP) they were supposed to fire turned out to be unsuitable because it did not have enough range and cost too much. In the meantime, the Navy wants to deploy the ship while it seeks a worthy  replacement round.
The ship “is a very capable platform with or without that gun,” Vice Adm. William R. Merz, deputy chief of naval operations for Warfare Systems, told a Senate panel during a recent hearing, Seapower reported.
