The Navy wants industry to submit ideas for prototype large unmanned surface vessels (LUSV). In the Sept. 5 request for proposal, the Navy wants potential contractors to address ways to integrate existing warfare systems with new platforms. Their designs should meet cost estimates and Navy specifications. The service wants to issue competitive detail design and construction contracts, and begin procuring the vessels, by sometime in fiscal year 2021, which begins next Oct. 1. The vessels would be able to operate autonomously and meet international navigation and anti-collision standards. Manned warships or control stations would operate any LUSV weapons systems. The Navy initially offered draft performance specifications on June 25, and held an industry day immediately afterward.
