The Navy is asking industry to come forward with ideas for a next-generation, medium-sized unmanned underwater vehicle. The new MUUV would be used to perform a host of autonomous missions heretofore undertaken by other manned and unmanned vehicles. The vehicle should be modular, with both open architecture and systems.
“It will provide submarine-based autonomous oceanographic sensing and data collection in support of intelligence preparation of the operational environment [and] persistent surface-launched and recovered mine countermeasures,” the Navy said in a press release.
A host of existing surface and undersea vessels – manned and unmanned – would be capable of launching and recovering the MUUV.
