The mobilization deferment policy has changed for sailors who wish to join the Selected Reserve. In a July 1 message, the Navy announced:

* All veterans of the Navy and other services who affiliate with the Navy Reserve now qualify for a one-year deferment from involuntary mobilization, effective of the date they entered the Selected Reserve. This includes anyone in the Individual Ready Reserve and Voluntary Training Units.
* Such veterans who affiliate with the Selected Reserve within six months of their release from active duty also qualify for the two-year deferment, effective the date they become affiliated with the Selective Reserve.
* Service members can only qualify for one mobilization deferment associated with their first Navy Reserve affiliation.
