Service members who are feeling the bite of higher housing costs in certain locations could soon get some relief. The Pentagon has authorized a temporary increase in the basic allowance for housing (BAH) in 56 stateside housing markets. The higher BAH rates will be available to active-duty and full-time National Guard members from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.

The Pentagon made the decision for the temporary increase after figures collected between March and August showed that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant effect on rental costs in the 56 markets. Each service should be able to provide information as to which sites are affected. Applicants for the higher BAH should be ready to present documentation regarding higher housing costs, lease information, mortgage rates and utility bills.
