The Marine Corps has punished more than 20 members for abusing recruits at the service’s basic-training facility in San Diego.
The Washington Post reported Oct. 5 that Marine Corps documents described a litany of incidents in which recruits were physically abused and subjected to racial epithets. The punishments stemmed from service-wide investigations into recruit training that began after a Muslim recruit died while fleeing a drill instructor at the Marine Corps’ Parris Island, S.C., training center. In an official statement, the Marine Corps told the Post that those who were punished represented a small percentage of those who work to train its recruits. The guilty members received non-judicial punishments for their actions rather than courts martial.
