Sailors who cut hair, do laundry and work in ships’ stores have a new name for their rating: Retail Services Specialist (RS). The Navy made the decision to change the name from Ships Serviceman (SH) last month, to “translate the skills and expertise … to work performed in the civilian sector,” the Navy stated in an administrative announcement. The conversion took place Oct. 1. While the name has changed, the jobs have not.

“This change is administrative and will not affect the current billet structure, personnel inventory or career paths,” the announcement stated.
