Eight U.S. service members have received Silver Star medals for valor during combat operations against the Islamic State. The Pentagon chose to keep the awards quiet, CNN reported, because of the classified nature of the missions. One involved a soldier who piloted a helicopter during a 10-hour hostage-rescue mission, even after he had been wounded. Another pilot was honored for flying a dangerous mission at night, and refusing to stop after his aircraft had been damaged. Four other awards are still classified. Two such awards were made public.
