Scientists at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and several universities are working on development of synthetic polymers that would mimic those the body produces to treat illnesses. While the so-monikered Fold F(x) program is years away from fruition, it someday could foster development of medications that do not have expiration dates. In time, combat medics no longer would have to worry about the medicines they carry in their kits losing effectiveness. To date, research teams have made inroads in creating synthetic polymers that have shown some promise in possibly treating biowarfare agents, Ebola, and Burkhoderia.
