National Guard and Reserve members who participate in TRICARE who have been called up to serve during the COVID-19 pandemic have become eligible for health-care coverage under the plan, provided that they have been activated for more than 30 days. Their activation is considered a qualifying life event, for eligibility purposes. TRICARE is urging reserve-component enrollees to make sure their DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) information is up to date. This would include both personal information, and that of family members. The DEERS web site will let beneficiaries know whether or not they are eligible for or can enroll in TRICARE Prime. People who live within 50 miles or one hour’s drive from a military treatment facility can enroll in TRICARE Prime. Those who do not may be eligible to enroll in TRICARE Prime Remote.
