As the Army plans for the future replacement for the M1 Abrams main battle tank, the
M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle and other wheeled or treaded systems, leadership envisions a series of five different platforms that would do the job. Speaking at the Association of the U.S. Army annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 9, Brig. Gen. Ross Coffman said that “a family of vehicles” likely would emerge as the service’s Next-Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV).
The NGCV would emerge as five platforms:
* An Optionally Manned Combat Vehicle to replace the Bradley.
* An Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV).
* Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF).
* Robotic Combat Vehicle.
* A Defense Lethality Platform to replace the Abrams.
The first four vehicles likely would be developed before the Abrams replacement, Coffman said.
