A female sailor on the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower has given birth to a 7-pound baby girl while the ship was deployed in the Persian Gulf. The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported Sept. 12 that the unidentified woman delivered the child after reporting to sickbay on the ship with complaints of stomach pain. She did not report that she was pregnant before the ship deployed from Norfolk June 1, and it is unclear whether she actually knew she was pregnant. A doctor on the ship who specializes in family practice delivered the child. Both mother and baby are doing well, according to the report. Shortly after the birth, a plane delivered diapers, formula and other neonatal necessities to the ship. The woman is assigned to Carrier Wing Three.
