Seaman David Miller, assigned to the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard, received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal April 26 in recognition of heroism he displayed in disarming an active shooter in San Diego. Miller, a religious programs specialist, was among those who responded during an Easter Sunday service when a woman produced a firearm and began threatening congregants, according to official records. Miller and the other men tackled and disarmed the woman, and rescued a child she was holding.
“I was glad I was able to do something. It was just lucky that everything ended up orchestrated the way it did,” Miller said.
