Service members, retirees, their families and other beneficiaries should be on the alert for scammers offering testing kits for COVID-19 or even recruiting for investment “opportunities.”
In particular, TRICARE has issued a warning that offers to sell or ship purported COVID-19 tests are phony. “COVID-19 testing isn’t available for everyone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), your medical provider is the only one who can determine if you need testing. So be sure to talk to him or her if you’re experiencing symptoms. (e.g. fever, cough, shortness of breath.)
“Scammers know COVID-19 testing kits are in high demand,” says Dr. John Kugler, chief of the Clinical Support Division at DHA. “They’re targeting beneficiaries who may be unaware of the testing process and looking to steal their personal information. Your health care provider will usually determine and order the test if you need it, so check with your doctor’s office if someone else offers you testing.”
DHA also warned of misinformation and scams on social media, noting that the Securities and Exchange Commission recently put out a statement on avoiding coronavirus-related investment scams.
Crooks will also solicit donations for causes and efforts that seem urgent and worthy. Of course, not everything is a scam – so if you are able to help when the time comes, exercise caution and perform your due diligence.
