The Navy commissioned its newest addition to the littoral combat ship (LCS) fleet — the Sioux City — during a Nov. 17 ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The 10thship in the LCS class, Sioux City is capable of conducting operations both close to shore and in open seas. Modular by design, the vessel can be reconfigured to serve a variety of different missions, such as mine countermeasures, surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare. It also will carry an MQ-8C Fire Scout autonomous helicopter, capable of quickly providing intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and target-acquisition information to the crew and other Navy assets in a given region of operation.
