An Army non-commissioned officer, a Coast Guard officer and two other commuters had to lift an overturned tour bus in order to rescue its passengers during Washington, D.C., rush hour June 14. The Washington Post reported that the bus carrying the passengers – Chinese tourists – collided with another vehicle in Alexandria, Va., at around 5 p.m. One person died. Sgt. 1st Class David Cooper, the unidentified Coast Guard officer and two other men pried an escape hatch open and began rescuing the stricken tourists. In order to reach a few who remained, however, they determined they had no other choice but to try to lift the vehicle. In time, a civilian rescue team arrived on scene to help the victims, several of whom were seriously hurt.
