Two California-based Army recruiters received the service’s highest award for heroism in a non-combat situation for their response during an active-shooter situation that occurred in July.
Staff Sergeants Isaiah Locklear and Michael Marl each received the Soldier’s Medal during a Nov. 9 ceremony in San Francisco, in recognition of the measures the two took to assist two young boys who were injured in the incident, which took place at the Tanforan Mall in San Bruno, Calif. Records show that as the situation unfolded, Locklear and Marl first made sure that the prospective recruits at their station were safe before moving to help the stricken boys. Both soldiers are attached to the Central California Army Recruiting Battalion.
